Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
10:32 am
The next month's schedule has gotten shaken out like a rag rug this morning.

I'd spent much of the last few weeks getting ready for a friend from New Zealand to come for a visit for most of September. He was going to be doing research at the Smithsonian, and he wanted to wander around the local area and into the Appalachian Mountains, all of which is easily possible. We turned the house upside down to make a space for a spare fold-out bed (the old futon died dead a few years ago, rock hard and moldy), and I got my tall friend Erik to help me pull down the old paper and paint the bathroom (which needed it, as it had not been redone since 1960 or so), and I was going to spend this week putting everything to rights before his arrival.

Today's email brought a message that he's had to postpone the visit because of his health. He's developed chronic fatigue -- he's spending a day in bed for every day on his feet -- and he is just not up to the trip. (I can readily believe it; I was exhausted by flying back from NZ and I was in good shape, but much of that had to do with United Airlines' inability to feed people anything edible ten years ago, so I landed with low blood sugar and the SU took me to a 24-hour diner to recover.) I hope he can get back into better health so he can visit.

So, now I don't have to do everything by the end of the week. I can get my ApocalypseKree! story done, I can relax a little, and then I can tackle the work that needs to be done on other projects. [Laundry. Sorting old bills. Ripping out the vines that are tangling up the azaleas.]

I'm very sorry he won't be coming; he'd wanted to go to Skiffy Night and watch old Doctor Who eps with my friends, and tour the Smithsonian museums and see Harper's Ferry and Point of Rocks, but I'd rather have him get healthy and come when he has energy to match his interests.

And now my calendar looks distressingly empty...
